If I am doing a performance, who do I schedule my time with?   When ASB is planning the event, they will ask who wants to perform.  You will say you want to perform.

EQ (review)

Senior team updated our rule of three for EQs today.  It is a minor change.   This makes sense for W, E and N because you saw me today. 

1) Provide a framework for studies (It calls for breadth and depth or research, Is not a yes/no question)
2) Takes a stance (Allows you to argue some point, Cannot be a recitation of facts or a list)
3) Format (It is specific, The wording makes sense)

Older Format

be an open-ended question (It cannot ask for a simple yes/no answer.)
take a stance (It must allow you to argue for some point. You cannot give a mere recitation of facts.)
provide a framework for studies (It calls for breadth and depth of research.)

Senior Project Suggestion

Do not worry about the EQ at this point.    (It may not go exactly like this, just an idea of how it could go): What if I told you, you were going to start with a working EQ which has no rules or format.  It is any question.  For example, lets say you ask what is art or what makes art, art.  You then spend the time researching this from now till about November.   At the end of October/early November, you really start getting into your mentorship.   Between your research, and while you are with your mentor, you begin to realize you have interest in the art of taking photos.  Your mentor has a photography background or connects you with another mentor who has this background.  You then really grasp the foundation of the topic and write an EQ following specific rules in late November narrowing down the topic.  You now have a mentor helping you with your EQ and you know exactly what you must do the rest of the year.    Your job right now is simple:

• volunteer 10 hours with a topic of interest (any) and complete blog 1
• try to conclude what topic interest you by the end of summer
• get contacts
• read the link on 2013 blog supplies and summer information
• go to the senior year website (see 2013 blog links) and click on senior project.  Read senior project introductory packet.   Feel free to check out the other senior project documents on the website.

Q & A

• Can I have the same topic as somebody else?  YES!   You can't have the same working EQ or you can't narrow it down the same way in a EQ you write later.
• What topics can't I do?  You can't do the topic of astrology or anything like it and pornography.  

Psycholgy Mentorship Idea

Tri-City is offering Peer Counselor training 6/22-24 8 A.M.-5 P.M.  Once young people are trained they are eligible to volunteer and will receive ongoing specialized training, supervision and support from clinical staff members.  They are expected to meet individually or in groups with assigned counselees as well as attend weekly meetings with staff supervision.

Product Tradeshow Presentations: Wednesday June 6th

(1) What is a product?

In PBL (project based learning), it is the outcome of your experience.  Seniors have spent up to nine months doing a senior project.  So what?  What will they take with them because of the experience?  That is the product.

(2) Does every project have a product?

Yes!  Ask yourself what you gained from the outcome of your last semester project experience.  It can't be just "I learned more, or I gained more knowledge."  It is the application of knowledge.

(3) Why should I go on Wednesday evening?

Senior projects start with the end in mind.   Does this mean that by the end of 2013, you will for sure achieve whatever your end goal is or product?  No!   But by starting with the end in mind, this gives you more direction.  

(4) Why should I invite my parents to go with me to see senior product presentations?

Your parents will have many questions about the senior project during the year.  If you give them an opportunity to see what the past class did, they will be better prepared to assist you during the year.

The Life of an Essential Question

• What is life of an essential question?

Essential Questions drive your project.  You will start with a draft essential question and over time with some solid foundational research you will revise your question.  You may go into more depth in your foundation and revise it again.  Then you will run into the issue of starting to answer your essential question and presuming your research and answers are solid, then you will have your officially end of the year essential question.  This may happen in November, December, or February.  It is different for everybody.   We hope to have a second draft by late September and then drafts in October and November.  The November draft should be your final EQ.

Examples:

What is best way to treat skin cancer?

What is the most effective way to treat an HIV positive patient in drug rehab?

What is the most convincing piece of evidence to ensure a verdict in a criminal case?

What is the best way to achieve maximum performance from an Audi?
What is the most dangerous insect?
What is the best way to win a game of Chess?

Essential questions must:

(a) be an open-ended question (can't be yes or no)
(b) take a stance (it must allow you to argue some point, it can't be a mere recitation of facts)
          -The underline part:  best way, most effective, and most convincing are there to address part (b)
(c) provide a framework of studies (it calls for breadth and depth of research)

• When do you have to officially pick your topic?

By the end of September, you must select your topic.

During the week of June 4th, I will be coming into the 2013 classrooms to show you how to make the blog for summer.   Once I show you, I will give you a due date on the blog.  For the next week in half, the senior team wants you to watch the presentations and think about topic choices and some end goals you would have by doing a senior project.

(1) Prom Meeting on Thursday at lunch in Navaroli's room: Please come.  We are going to go over prom search expectations and begin to set up the search.  We have to have a prom site booked by the end of June.

(2) Two-Hour Presentation Update:

• Pay close attention to what the senior did to meet their service learning requirement
• If you have questions for the senior during the presentation, try to wait until to the end of the presentation.  Q & A does not count toward the 30 minutes of talking time for the senior.

2-Hour Presentations

2-Hour Presentations start on Monday May 21st.  When watching the 2-Hour Presentations, please pay attention for:

• What their essential question is
• Their different specific answers
• Their best answer and why
• What they say their most important sources are
• And what their product is

You do not need to write any of this down.  It is simply for you to see the most important parts of the project as you develop your own senior project.  The senior project is a year long experience, so you are not expected to have anything more than a topic choice, 10 hours of volunteering, and a creation of blog (which you will send me the link) by the time the senior year starts.  

Please pay attention and participate in the seniors 2-Hour Presentations.

Your participation is the 2-hour presentations is your first senior year grade.  You are expected to participate.  If you do, you will earn a proficiency for each presentation.  Each presentation is worth 3 points and a proficiency is worth 3 points.
